Did you see the Super Moon? Photo by Bob Kelly

For another evening or so, the moon will be at the lowest point of its orbit for a year, which in bringing it visibly closer to the earth will make it appear 15% larger, particularly around the time it is rising. An analogy that made sense to me is that if one thinks of the normal full moon as a tennis ball, this Super Moon would be more like a good sized orange. It is a tough shot to capture, and this not as superlative as I had hoped it would be, but it does show up reasonably well, and the moon glow lining on the tops of the clouds adds a nice touch. You can look for it on Sunday night if it is clear, shortly after 9:00 PM, and for the best view of ALL, go out in the country so you can see the horizon line, and watch it pop up like a big squished beach ball. The atmosphere creates an optical distortion, making it look fat, but elongated, until it reaches a higher plane when it appears spherical. I know it all sounds a bit "looney," but after all it IS the moon, and it will be another year before you can see it this way again! Go for it!
