Recommendation

My friend and Brother Ken Davis has a posting at Prospero's Books about a subject that fascinates me.  Hermeticism.  I have copied his post here.

Hermetic video

Hermes_Mercurius_Trismegistus from WikimediaHermeticism is valuable today for (among other things)
  • its "big picture" view of the cosmos
  • its emphasis on the interconnection of everything
  • its metaphoric descriptions of systems, large and small
Two good introductory videos have been created by Christopher Warnock at Renaissance Astrology:

What have the Unions done for us?

As a member of the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association and the Ames Education Association and a Delegate to Local, Unit, State and National meetings I saw first hand what the unions have done for us.  Now more than ever the unions are under attack from the radical right-wing thugs and we need to stand with them.  In case you have forgotten what the Unions have done for the working person watch this video. It is Labor Day Week-end.

Saturday's Surprise

U.S. Highway 30 crosses Iowa from East to West (or West to East depending on which way you are driving.  In 1959 (the year I graduated from High School the Iowa Department of Transportation made a film of a portion of that road to convince people that it needed to be modernized and made safer.

Someone on Facebook found that film and the Web Site where it resides today.

It was taken using a ladder on the back of a station wagon and a brave cameraman (camera person) probably tied to the top of the ladder.  I don't know where they had the musicians who played the background music.

Relocation Film from Iowa DOT on Vimeo.

The thing I found most engaging about it was looking at the cars and the fashions of the women when they passed by them,  I was sorry I could not get it to embiggen as it would have been fun to see a little larger perspective.  It only lasts about 20 minutes and I hope you will enjoy it.  You can also view it on this Web Site in a clearer larger format.and it has more information about how it was filmed.

Found For Friday - Puns

There were three Indian squaws. One slept on a deer skin, one slept on an elk skin, and the third slept on a hippopotamus skin. All three became pregnant. The first two each had a baby boy. The one who slept on the hippopotamus skin had twin boys. This just goes to prove that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.

A famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to the local civic official who apologized profusely saying, "I must have taken Leif off my census."
An Indian chief was feeling very sick, so he summoned the medicine man. After a brief examination, the medicine man took out a long, thin strip of elk rawhide and gave it to the chief, telling him to bite off, chew, and swallow one inch of the leather every day. After a month, the medicine man returned to see how the chief was feeling. The chief shrugged and said, "The thong is ended, but the malady lingers on."
A marine biologist developed a race of genetically engineered dolphins that could live forever if they were fed a steady diet of seagulls. One day, his supply of the birds ran out so he had to go out and trap some more. On the way back, he spied two lions asleep on the road. Afraid to wake them, he gingerly stepped over them. Immediately, he was arrested and charged with -- transporting gulls across sedate lions for immortal porpoises.
A man rushed into a busy doctor's office and shouted, "Doctor! I think I'm shrinking!" The doctor calmly responded, "Now, settle down. You'll just have to be a little patient."
Evidence has been found that William Tell and his family were avid bowlers. Unfortunately, all the Swiss league records were destroyed in a fire, and so we'll never know for whom the Tells bowled.

I thought I saw an eye doctor on an Alaskan island, but it turned out to be an optical Aleutian.

Thanks for stopping by have a great week-end!

Cassie's Birthday Cards

Cassie received two e-cards.. Thanks to John

Rabbit, Rabbit - Happy Birthday Cassie

It's the first day of the month - Rabbit, Rabbit.

Today is Miss Cassie's 13th birthday.  She really is much sweeter than these pictures show but I think they give her character.

Wednesday I set the alarm for 7:00 am because I had an appointment to have my brace (leg) checked. I found out that it was adjustable so I can take care of that. He suggested that I get some compression hose. So I went up to Choice Medical and my friend was still there.  (20 years ago he serviced my mother's oxygen.  He went and got some and then asked me if I had anyone at home to help me put them on.  Well I don't and they are too difficult to get on by myself so that idea was out.  However I went down to Des Moines and got a couple more pair of Travel Socks and they should help.

I then decided that I was going to eat down there since I did not want to have the trip down there for just the socks.  I turned on my Navigator on my phone.  I turned on the Google.  Hit the microphone and spoke the words tenderloin, Grimes. BOOM it came up with The Radish in Grimes and I checked their menu.  I remembered that was the place a friend of mine had mentioned.  So I switched to "Car Mode" on my phone and hit navigate and pressed the microphone button again.  I spoke the address and it started telling me where to go.  Took me right to the restaurant and I enjoyed my supper,

There was a family with four kids at the next table. The kids were so nice and well behaved (except for the little girl but even she settled down) that I gave each of them a gold dollar. It's my thing.  I carry gold dollars around to give to kids.  Dumb but I like giving and since my other friends no longer want me to give them things I can still give to kids.  (At least it is not candy)

I played naughty with the navigator on the way to and from the restaurant. ( had to go to the grocery store also.)  I deliberately disobeyed the nice lady who lives inside the phone when she told me where to go and had fun listening to her decide (almost instantly) another route home after I ignored its directions.  It got me right to the grocery store.  Much better than the navigator on my old phone.. 3G

About two weeks ago when I last went to the grocery store I  lost my walking stick.  I had called several times and it wasn't there.  So I ordered a new one.  It came today.  As luck would have it when I was at the store I asked them if they had found my walking stick.  The young man said "the one with the compass" (It has a masonic emblem on the handle)  yep, they found it so now I have two.
