This 'N That

 When I look at this picture the only thing that comes to mind is Frick and Frack which is defined by the Urban Dictionary as - Two people, usually 

employees of a company, 

who are deemed to be 

incompetent, lazy, or 

wasting time continuously 

by doing things other 

than working.

Actually Frick and Frack were two Swiss skaters who came to the U.S. in 1937 and joined the original Ice Follies show as comedy ice skaters. They were actually very talented and competent (unlike the two in the meme above) and very few skaters were able to duplicate their routines. Here is a sample of their work.

Former Ames Art Teacher who is also retired sent me several pictures of flowers she has grown.  She lives up in the Mt. Rushmore area now.  We used to eat out together once in awhile and I miss having her around.

The collection will all embiggen if you click on the pictures I love roses and it was really nice to get the e-mail with the flowers attached. I hope she doesn't mind that I shared them with you.

 Michael Libbe had this video up on Facebook. The song was written by Jamie Reno who was the son of Walt Reno who was a radio and television personality around here in the late 60's and early 70's.  I had a nice Facebook chat with him to get permission to use it on Iowa Vistas Blog (a work in progress) and it was nice to remember Walt with him.

I have been having fun with a "War on Thanksgiving" theme and every time someone posts something about Christmas I accuse them of waging a War on Thanksgiving.  You see Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Halloween is a fun holiday and starts the Holiday Season.  I always liked the Christmas to New Years break and I think the thing I liked the most about Christmas was being able to get and give gifts to my family.  Alas the family stopped giving gifts several years ago (after I had already purchased their gifts they told me they weren't exchanging gifts any more so I gave them to other people) and I started working the Jerry Marsengill Holiday dinner in Des Moines that the Masons did every year. Even though I am not Jewish I enjoy their holidays that come during this time also.

I grew up in a mostly secular family. Mother made sure I went to church but the family observance was to get together and eat a large meal.  Thanksgiving was always special to me. I think the whole idea of saying Thank You appeals to me.  I could (as some are doing) list the things I am grateful for but instead I shall "ponder them in my heart" rather than publish day after day of things I am grateful for.  I guess I am most grateful for the chance to have lived a mostly satisfying life for 72 years with friends and family who allowed me to love them and who loved me in return.  I think the whole idea of love is in our being to show us what God is.  That is really enough to be grateful for. Oh yes and I am grateful for each and every one of you who stop by here to see what I have put up.  I hope you enjoy it.

Thursday This 'N That

I am not a baseball fan, too many hours watching it in the cafeteria at my High School in the 50s but I am a music fan and this is wonderful (BTW some of the buildings in the back of the Boston players are the Christian Science Mother Church and Extension as well as the Mary Baker Eddy Library)

I found this on Americablog - It is a story of how a goat led a blind horse around for 16 years.  The more I hear about things like this the more sure I am that there is something good in the Universe.  It is an amazing story, I hope you will take a few minutes to watch it.

What Do Teacher's Make?

Monday (yesterday) I took Molly up to Story City to get her toenails trimmed.  It was 100 degrees so we just went up and right back home but I did stop at Slim's Fruit stand and picked up some tomatoes and sweet corn. I took Molly home and ran out to get some bread (the other loaf had mold on it) and some bacon.  I cooked up the bacon, sliced the tomatoes and toasted the bread.  Then I cooked the sweetcorn in the microwave.  I had heard of this method before but had not tried it.

I googled it and found the video below and my oh my it made for good corn.  I had three ears.  As my Aunt Ellen uses to say.  "My sufficiency is satasfied."

For the right way, if you take away the other person's name, you can tell 

which to use:


"John and me are going to the mall."

"Me (am) going the the mall," that sounds wrong. So it would be "John 

and I are going to the mall." (I am going)

THEN,

For other way


"Do you want to go to the mall with John and I ?"

Take them away, "Do you want to go to the mall with I ?"


That sounds totally wrong, so it would be "Do you want to go to the mall 

with John and me?" (to the mall with me)

It drives me nuts that even characters on tv get this wrong.

 So many people mess these up.  But it is not as bad, you know, as having to, you know listen to someone who, you know repeats that phrase, you know over and you know over again..  Play my game and count them..either when someone is being interviewed on a show or having a conversation with you...you know it can be kind of fun.

My new philosophy.

Non sequitur is my favorite cartoon.  I love this one. 

Writing is the one thing which makes us more.  Without it we would just be an animal who gathers food, eats, reproduces and eventually dies.  We would probably love, I am sure that animals love.  My dog loves me.  I can tell the way she behaves and I know that other animals also love.  I saw a video today of two elephants which had been separated for 20 years.  They recognized each other and to see them touching and winding their trunks around each other was remarkable. It brought tears to my eyes.

People learned how to write and passed on their knowledge to those who came after them. There is so much information which has been written down and passed on that no one could ever read it all.  But being human we have invented ways to use much of it and you can even search for much of it on the internet which is a remarkable asset.   I can remember when I was younger I would get a volume of an encyclopedia and thumb through it and read articles which interested me.  Now my encyclopedia is on the internet and if I want to know something I "google" it.

I spend way too much time reading things. I seem to have an insatiable desire to read.  I read everything. I fill all sorts of space with reading.  I even read when I watch TV,   I guess that is what makes me human.  Either that or writing...they are connected after all.

I am finishing up with the best thing I have seen on the Internets for a long time. Ashton tells it like it is. Please watch. This Iowa boy has a great message. I hope they were listening

This 'n That

Not much to report.  I have been at home for about 4 days.  No desire to go out or do anything.  I went to Lodge for dinner Thursday night and needed to go to the grocery store so I went there instead of going to the Lodge meeting.  Then since I did not need to go out I didn't.  I mostly read and watched some T V,    I finished a book  Prophet of Bones -  "Paul Carlson, a brilliant young scientist, is summoned from his laboratory job to the remote Indonesian island of Flores to collect DNA samples from the ancient bones of a strange, new species of tool user unearthed by an archaeological dig. The questions the find raises seem to cast doubt on the very foundations of modern science, which has proven the world to be only 5,800 years old, but before Paul can fully grapple with the implications of his find, the dig is violently shut down by paramilitaries."

I gave it 3 stars and I wrote - I enjoyed this book for the possibilities which it raised in my mind for alternative reality and evolution. The scientific material was a little above my level but the story and action kept me interested
After I finished that I started The Cove.  So far I am really enjoying it. I'll let you know more when I finish it.

Then on Monday I decided I had better get out of the house.  I went to pick up my new shoes which I will have to get used to.

Then I came home and took care of some business for my (new) insurance agent. Finally I went down to Cinemark and went to see Red 2

I (along with 71% of the audiences) enjoyed it according to Rotten Tomatoes and I loved Helen Merrin.  It made my afternoon enjoyable.  I seemed to be the only one in the audience laughing at times.

While I was at the bank I ran into a friend I had not seen for ages. We got to talking and she asked me about someone that she thought was related to me.  turns out he wasn't but I know him and there is a connection to a member of my family.  She wanted to know what was "wrong" with him.  Turns out he is kind of loud and "scary" and she wondered what he was doing at her church.. She mentioned that she avoids sitting near him. -  This lead to further conversations about church.  I mentioned that I no longer attend church. I told her that someone Thursday night told me that I might like to attend such and such a church and I told him I consider it unnecessary.  Said I was a "Church Alumni" - She asked me why I felt that way.  I told her I didn't like "Christians" very much.  That I didn't like the homophobia, and anti woman, unwelcoming behavior. I think she left with something to think about...


I stopped at Panera tonight and picked up a loaf of bread and a cinnamon roll for breakfast and some lemon chicken soup for supper.  I guess the one balances the other.

There is this and then there is that.

I used to have a sign in my classroom that said "You can't lift yourself up by putting others down."   

I read someplace this week-end that we need to teach children to have empathy. Then they won't become bullies.  That makes a great deal of sense to me.

Children used to be taught to tell a bully, "That is hurtful to me."  "You are being unkind."  Teachers react to bullies and in some cases become bullies themselves. They need to be proactive in teaching prevention.

If we teach a child how it feels to walk in another person's shoes and how they feel and what those words can do to them perhaps they won't bully others.

In the meantime when bullying happens it needs to be reported and there need to be consequences

I drove to Indianola today to pick up Bruce who was taking my sister's new van down so that Total Mobility could find the short that was causing the dash bord to not function. It was nice to be able to do it.  I drove down the east side and back on the west side.  I noticed that there are a few more flowers out but not as much green as I would like.  We need some more warm days.  But we are better off than the folks in Minnesota who are getting a snow storm.  In fact we may get snow here this week.  So not ready for more snow.  

I was watching Rachel tonight and she had a really neat segment about the White House Science Fair. I found a link. We used to have Science Fairs at school but how much neater would it be to be the President and have your own Science Fair.  Just for you.

I was surprised when reading one of my blogs to find that he had listed me as one of his Best blogs of 2013. Over at TYWKIWDBI  - Click on over to see the rest of the blogs on the list.  And by the way his blog is one of my favorites. I always learn something because of his blog.

And finally, yesterday was Earth Day. One of my favorite days. I used to have the kids do a project for Earth Day.  Self-designed and individual (no group for this one) - Some of the things they did was to plant flowers, clean up trash, etc. Then we had a "Science Fair" of our own to share our findings and projects.  It was a great project.  I liked it and the kids did something to show that they could make a difference.

I have been following the Sleepy Man Banjo Boys for a couple of years ago.  Fast forward through the yacking at the first and listen to these guys. They are good.  And they are from New Jersey.

Deganawidah

I just finished reading a great book called 1491 - New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann. (Video here.) In it he mentions Deganwida. Supposedly born of a virgin he came to the people of the Americas in the early 15th Century and brought peace to waring tribes.  I had never heard of him before so I did some more research and found out a little about him.

Deganwida was the great prophet who appeared to the Seneca First Peoples who came across Lake Champlain in a stone boat.

Deganawida taught the Seneca the ways of Peace. The same "Man of Peace" who appeared to the rest of the tribes on Turtle Island, and also the tribes of the Old Testament. He appeared to the Lakota Sioux, bringing the Peace Pipe and teaching the ways of Peace. To the Myans, the Aztecs, the Cherokee. All tribes. He constructed the Articles of Confederation the League of Five Nations while with the Seneca. Then he appointed Hiawatha His disciple and sent him out to convince other nations to make peace among themselves and join together to fight this new peril from the North. The Pale One, man of peace, the Peacemaker, the great Holy Man appeared in many forms to all of the Native Peoples.

Deganwida and his disciple Hiawatha worked to bring the five tribes away from their waring ways they set up a system where the women owned the land and they chose the leaders.  The five tribes were organized into a confederation. They lived in peace and Their constitution and democratic system of government was admired by the newcomers, (those who came from Europe to colonize this country) particularly Benjamin Franklin, and this, along with its similarity, has given rise to the belief that the American Constitution is based upon the constitution given to the Iroquois Confederacy by Deganawida and Hiawatha.

I found 1491 to be a fascinating read.  It gives a far different story of the indigenous American peoples prior to the time when Christopher Columbus arrived. In that time (as a friend wrote me) "Native Americans lived in harmony with nature, never wasting stuff, never screwing stuff up. They deliberately killed off entire herds of animals to minimize their effect on their gardens, and burned so much forest that it created warming in Europe..." 

The civilizations of the Western Hemisphere were many and sophisticated. I learned a lot and have a much greater appreciation for the earliest inhabitants of our hemisphere.  Jon and I went to several sites in our travels including some mounds.  What I had not realized was how much manipulation of the environment was going on by these people and how many people were supported by their technology.  

I really recommend that you read this book.  If you are interested in history this will open your eyes. 

The Iowa Legislature

Some folks in the legislature have proposed a bill House File 147 which would criminalize the sale of U S Flags manufactured outside of the United States.  It would be a misdemeanor and a vendor could spend a year in jail or be fined $1875.00 for doing so.

First this is a stupid thing to wast time on especially since the legislature is not even following its own law for the second year in a row by not setting the allowable growth for the schools.  Second, if they are going to do something like this why not extend it to other things such as smartphones, TVs and cars. It might drive Walmart out of business.  We buy a lot of things which are not made in the USA (although we should look for the Made in the USA label) so why limit to flags.  I wonder if they would include a shirt with a flag sewn on it as made outside the US.  Pardon me while I go find a wall to hit my head against.

Tuesday This 'n That

I was thinking about The Ed Sullivan Theater where David Letterman does his show.  I was remembering the hours I spent watching that show. It was on Sunday nights and my grandmother would throw her shawl around her shoulders and come in to relax and watch the TV with the family. (Sunday was a big day.  She worked in the kitchen and cooked a big dinner and a lot of the family came by.  She always cooked, was the best cook in the family.) She sat in a wooden rocker.  We all watched the Variety show which included Virtually every type of entertainment; opera singers, popular artists, songwriters, comedians, ballet dancers, dramatic actors performing monologues from plays, and circus acts were regularly featured.

I think that is the reason I grew up loving dance, drama, opera and Broadway Musicals (I still remember Paul Lynde singing "Kids" ) -   Ed had them all.  He put together a "really big show."

Elvis Presley and the Beatles also on his show as well as circus and animal acts.  He would introduce people in the audience, most of whom I did not know.

I was probably thinking of them because I called WOI Radio today and had a really nice conversation with the manager.  I called to see when the Classical Music Station was going to be available in Ames. Right now the signal is weak and full of static.  It seems the FCC is the hold up as they have filed all the paperwork to get permission to go full signal so we all just have to wait.  In the meantime I am not able to listen to the classical music that I used to listen to nor have I been able to hear the Met Operas that are broadcast on Saturdays.

I was not happy when they made the change and I asked him why they had done it.  It turns out the the Regents have decided not to support the Iowa Public  Radio after 2016 so they will lose a significant amount of money.  (They won't get mine until the signal comes in again.)  I did enjoy speaking with him and since there is not much I can do about it I am forced to listen to my CDs.  I have a machine that is connected to my Boise Radio.  It holds 300 discs and I can play them one at a time or I can set it on shuffle and let it surprise me.  I am enjoying doing that.

I did watch the halftime show for the Stupor Bowl on YouTube.  I wasn't impressed. It reminded me of the time I came into my classroom one day and found one of my girls (who was already developed in 5th grade) standing on top of a chair in short shorts and a tight top dancing to music on the radio.  It was indoor recess.  I told her that it was not appropriate to wiggle like that in the classroom.  I found out later that she was a big Britney Spears fan and she was aping her.  

It also reminded me of the time the Junior High school girls performed for a teachers/administrators dinner and they did a pop song and were dancing and wearing very short skirts and wiggling their bottoms and shaking their tops in a suggestive manner in the face of the old men administrators who were drooling over them  I let my inner prude come out and did not approve.  But I didn't say anything. I blamed the teacher/choreographer. She was the one who allowed the behavior. But I didn't think Beyonce's show was all that good even though I love her singing.

I think perhaps I should have been born in the Edwardian Era where people dressed up. I just think things have gotten casual to the point of poor taste.  And don't even get me talking about the guests on David Letterman's show who sit there in flimsy dresses and spend half the time pulling their way to short skirts down.

Back to the Ed Sullivan Theater.  Chris Christe, the Governor of New Jersey, was on the David Letterman show tonight. Video here. He is a big guy (as am I) but he is someone I admire.  Letterman has made many many jokes about him and the first part of the show they spoke about that. Christie said that he loves the show, David Letterman and doesn't mind the jokes if they are funny.  While he was talking he took  a jelly doughnut out of his pocket and started to eat it.  It broke Letterman up.  I mean he lost it. It was so funny.  I laughed out loud for a whole minute. 

Christe knows that he is big. He also sees his doctor and his Cholesterol blood sugar and other health signs are good. He spoke about his frustration in getting help for the thousands of families and businesses that are still displaced by the Hurricane.  The people of New Jersey are lucky in their governor.  He is out there working to get things done.  Yes he is outspoken and can be abrasive but he is usually justified and he is doing it for the people of his state.  The only thing I hold against him is his veto of the same sex marriage bill.

Our governor in Iowa is a different matter.  Instead of working to get things done he is holding the children of the State of Iowa hostage and the and the Republithugs will not pass the allowable growth bill which was (by law) supposed to be passed within 30 days after the legislature began LAST YEAR. He won't sign it unless they pass his school reform and the Republithugs are just against public education.  Grrrrr.

The Republiscum are always talking about "public sector jobs" and how they don't count because they are not jobs in the private sector.  Those "public sector jobs" are the most vital to our nation, they are not bureaucrats, they are teachers, police officers, firemen, people who work on the infrastructure (which is aging) and they need to realize that those are really important.

Speaking of Education.  More and more I think we need to have a radical change in the way we do business.  Read, study, listen to lectures, look at videos, take tests are not the things which will make you a success.  Yes you need certain basic information but more than all of those iterated you need to know how to work with others, how to find and use information, how to work alone when necessary.  Finding balance is also important and how do you show your success. You show it by producing a product, whether it be a research paper or a model that works.

Wednesday's This 'N That

I went to see the foot doctor today (Tuesday).  Last Friday when I was getting dressed to go to an appointment I caught my toe nail on the sock and half the toenail ripped off. As a diabetic I worry about my feet. People with diabetes often lose their feet and legs to the disease.  I usually ignore things like that knowing that my body will usually take care of the things that are wrong with me.  However.  Since I only have one good foot I do worry.  I was able to get an appointment with the only person I will let deal with my feet.  Mark V. Sorrentino.

I was able to get an appointment for Tuesday and so today I had the bus pick me up and take me out to see Dr. Mark.  He trimmed the toenail and then took care of the rest of them.  I now have an appointment in three months to do it again. It will be a good thing as I have a lot of trouble trimming my own nails and often draw blood.

The picture is of the new "boot" which I convinced him I needed.  It goes on the left foot.  That is the one I had the ankle fusion operation on which was necessary due to a Charcot condition in my ankle. This was about 6 or 7 years ago.  When I go out I wear a brace and lifter shoe but around the house I have to wear "das boot" - I tried to walk once without the boot on and there is enough difference in height that I was unstable on my feet. I won't try that again. If I fell it would take a crane to get me up.

And I have these knees that don't work right so I have a great deal of difficulty getting up and down from chairs (especially chairs with no arms that are low) and so I have to be careful of where I sit. I need to push myself up because there is no strength in my legs and knees to get up and down.  I blame it on a medicine I took which caused me to have muscle problems. But what do I know.

Anyway the toe is all right and he took care of my feet. Now if I could figure out what to do about the knees and getting up and down. That is one of the reasons I am not fond of going to Lodge or to other places. There are some movie theaters that I can't go to because I cant get up out of their chairs.  Took me 5 minutes. It was interesting at Lodge last Friday the Junior Warden paused while I got up before he  invited the brothers to say the pledge. It was very considerate of him.

  However I am able to get around and I still can walk and will be able to drive when I get my license back and things could be a heck of a lot worse.  When I think of my sister in her wheelchair and what she goes through I don't really have a lot to complain about.  But that won't stop me.

I woke up at 5 am this morning probably because I was worried about the toe and so I took a two hour nap this afternoon.  Molly wanted to go out and fraternize with the black dog (Bobo?) who lives behind us so I let her.

Change of pace. Some dogs who like to surf, snowboard and ride a scooter board.  Enjoy.

I was watching Dave Letterman Tuesday night and Julianna Margulies was on.  She mentioned that she had taken her husband to Berlin for his birthday.  She had not told him where they were going and it was a complete surprise.  They went to see Max Raabe.  I had never heard of him so I got out the trusty Google and found some YouTube videos.  Miss Margulies mentioned her husband's eclectic musical tastes. (How often do you hear a celebrity use the word eclectic?  If you look around this page you can find it on here also.) You know I really like this music so I am giving him a shout out on my blog.  I tried to order it from iTunes but iTunes would not work so I will check with Amazon. In the meantime enjoy some music.

I decided that I needed to cook something today so I purchased some ingredients and browned the stew meat and onions and threw the seasonings and veggies and broth and water into the crock pot and turned it on and let it cook all day Monday and overnight and then today I tried the new bake it yourself bread which came out very nicely and so I had fresh bread and Beef Stew for supper. I posted a picture to Facebook and got 20 people to like it.  Some people were surprised that I could cook.  I used to cook a lot when my mother was alive. She did not like to cook (but she could make candy like no one else) - after working all day it was hard to come home and spend a lot of time preparing dinner.  Somehow she knew that I needed some skills that other guys did not have so she taught me to sew on buttons (and stitch up pants), do laundry and encouraged my cooking. I can also clean but that has gotten a lot harder since I fell and messed up my shoulder.

I tried to change some light bulbs the other night and could not raise my arm high enough to change them.  It is hell getting older.  Speaking of getting old.  I told The Grand High Priest when he called me to wish me a Happy Birthday that I did not celebrate them any longer as it had gotten to hard to remember how old I was.  

Weirdest thought of the day -

Over on Facebook someone was talking about what could be done with cremains. He said that someone was going to turn the ashes into ammunition and use it for shooting. So I got to thinking about the Mt. St. Helens emerald earrings I got my mother when I was in Seattle.  They were made from the ashes from the volcano eruption. I suggested that they could take my ashes and make gemstones of them and then make necklaces and have some starlet from Hollywood wear them to the Oscars.  Then when they are asked on the Red Carpet Interviewer "Who are you wearing?"  they can say Jay Simser.  

I told you it was weird.  

It is possibly because my days and nights seem to be mixed up.  I slept until 10:00 AM yesterday and then took a nap around 7 PM and am still up writing this at 2:14 AM.  Must go to sleep.  Have a good Wednesday!

Last night in Des Moines

 The president came back to where it all started last night.  He filled East Des Moines with a diverse crowd of people bundled up against the 40 degree weather to hear the final speech of the campaign.

This evening Molly has been especially cuddly and on my lap for a couple of hours.  I needed her on my lap and I guess she knew it.  I scanned some pictures this week-end and was going to scan some more today but I have this thing called a Kindle and have been reading a great Masonic Book.  I absolutely love the Kindle.  I ordered a Book on Amazon and by the time I had picked up the Kindle it was downloading into the device.  And it took less than a minute.

I am going to learn more about it but right now I just want to read.  And I can do it with Molly on my lap.

Tomorrow the election will be over and mercifully the ads about Steve King will be gone from my TV and hopefully he will be gone from Congress. I hope Nate Silver is right.

I have been busy.  Not only have I had to clean my office so that I could find some things and am I getting ready for an Annual Meeting on Saturday so  I haven't even had time to fart let alone think about what I could write. So this is what you get. 

The first debate is tonight.  I don't know why I should watch as I have already cast my ballot. But I may just to see how the candidates do.  Here is a game to play while you watch.

I really dislike Paul Ryan.  Not only does he lie but he is a devotee of Ayn Rand who I rejected Aeons ago.  He is one of those bullies who cares for no one but himself and the rest of us are just here to serve him.

Of course, once again the Republican Presidential Candidate has chosen a less than stellar Vice Presidential Candidate.  In some ways he is a male Sara Palin. Out only for himself and the hell with the rest of us.  In four years he will probably be the Republican Candidate unless that truly despicable Ralph Reed decides to run.

Of course there was one who was really worse and I won't even mention that Bacuhman Crazy from Minnesota - just to awful.
