Dramatic sunset in Ames Tuesday night, September 22, 2105 - Photos by Bob Kelly

Mother Nature painted a beautiful sky in some dramatic moments between 6:50 and 7:17 Tuesday night, September 22, 2015.  The clouds were rolling and looking ominous despite the beautiful golden glow.  We had received sprinkles of rain, and the stage was set for a rainbow with bright sun in the West, dark sky in the East, and raindrops falling over Ames, but alas there apparently were not enough rain drops to create the cumulative prism effect that makes rainbows.  It would have been a dramatic one, had it happened, and as I shot these scenes to the western sky, I kept looking over my shoulder….hoping!

Some of the cloud shapes took on the look of characters we know about.  In one I see a stern George Washington, apparently with a spectacle atop his nose!
In another I see a happy troll character with a pointed chin and nose, with a foxy hair do over the top of his head, perhaps a climatology version of Donald Trump! The final views were on the Western horizon, with once scene from across a soybean field, and the other with highway 30 in the foreground.  On nights like this is good to look to the sky and get yourself out to an open space, and you might just be treated to something like this…or better.  Then again there still is that potential rainbow out there, may you find yours, as I am also search and hoping for mine!!
