Time for Skunk ice again Photos by Bob Kelly

Skunk ice is my fun term for the big blocks of ice that collect along the banks of the Skunk River as it flows down through River Valley Park along the north side of 13th Street.  There are lots of shapes and sizes and some of them are over two feet thick.  They will just sit there as they gently hold on to one another, but in a few more warm days they will let loose, rush over the dam, and be on their way to Des Moines.  If you would like to see them, drive down the parking lot my Carr's Pool, park there, and walk out onto the bridge over the Skunk River.  You can also drive down to River Valley Park on the north side of 13th to where the dam is, and see them along that area as well.  The chirping red Cardinal was advising me to tell you, "Don't wait too long, for they are anxious to get to Des Moines!" Enjoy!
