Toad Tuesday

The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal, the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant. Its species name refers to its camel-like shape and its leopard-like colouring. Its chief distinguishing characteristics are its extremely long neck and legs, its horn-like ossicones, and its distinctive coat patterns. It is classified under the family Giraffidae, along with its closest extant relative, the okapi. The nine subspecies are distinguished by their coat patterns. From Wikipedia.

On the treatment of elephants.

(AP)
VIENNA, Virginia - The owner of the Ringling Bros. circus has agreed to pay a $270,000 fine to settle allegations that it violated federal animal-welfare laws in its handling of elephants, tigers, zebras and other exotic animals. More here.

Wikipedia reports in their article on elephants that "
There is growing resistance against the capture, confinement, and use of wild elephants. Animal rights advocates allege elephants in zoos and circuses "suffer a life of chronic physical ailments, social deprivation, emotional starvation, and premature death". Zoos argue that standards for treatment of elephants are extremely high and minimum requirements for such things as minimum space requirements, enclosure design, nutrition, reproduction, enrichment and veterinary care are set to ensure the well-being of elephants in captivity. However, elephants in zoos have a reduced life-span and reproduction compared to working elephants in timber camps[and in a survey of elephants in the UK, 54% of the elephants showed stereotypical behaviour.[ Circuses continue to have a mixed record. Recently, the city of Los Angeles closed an elephant act with Circus Vazquez due to numerous instances of abuse and neglect (April 2008), and according to PETA, 27 elephants owned by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus have died since 1992.
Elephants have traditionally been a major part of circuses around the world, being intelligent enough to be trained in a variety of acts (see for example P.T. Barnum's Jumbo and John L. Sullivan, the famous "Boxing Elephant"). However, conditions for circus elephants are unnatural (confinement in small pens or cages, restraints on their feet, lack of companionship of other elephants)."
I used to belong to the Shrine.  One of the things I did not like about the Shrine was the Circus with the elephants. I enjoyed seeing the elephants and am always in awe of them but once I had been made aware of the treatment of their animals I really did not want to be associated with the Shrine Circus.  You can read some of the facts about the Shrine Circus in a fact sheet here.  I am not going to put the Shrine down.  They do much good.  However in some cases they need to wake up to the facts.  Is it fair to raise money by mistreating the majestic animals who are intelligent, social and caring?  One of the elephants in the Elephant Sanctuary (Link below) had a dog for a friend.  Tarra and Bella were inseparable.  When Bella was killed (probably by coyotes) Tarra carried her up to where she would be found and then mourned her much as humans mourn for their dead loves.  You can see their story on the Web Site.
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is home to rescued elephants.  You can see them here.

I am glad that the Circus had to pay a fine.  I wish that there was a law prohibiting the display of these animals. In the meantime I am glad that there are people who dedicate their lives to helping these endangered animals.

"Teddy Bear," the porcupine, doesn't like to share...

Teddy is making the rounds.  My sister had him on Facebook and I have seen him in several places.  He is adorable.

Monday was a busy day.  I had to go down to Altoona for a meeting.  While I was there I filled up with gas which was 15 cents a gallon cheaper than the gas in Ames. I came home after the meeting and had a yoghurt and then worked on a form letter to send some checks out that the Lodge had voted to spend to help with Charity projects.  I set up an Excell spreadsheet to fill in the names, addresses, amounts and then wrote the letter using a mail merge function and when I printed them each was individual for the recipient.  I then could write the checks, generate labels for the envelopes and mail the checks. I don't know that it was efficient as I had to do some learning to do it but once I got things set up it was really slick.  Worked like magic.

Speaking of magic.  I don't know how they do it but my cell phone has a navigator function.  All I had to do was type in the address of the place I was going and hit the button and the phone found the Satellite and gave me step by step directions on getting to the Lodge Hall in Altoona.  I had printed out a map from "Get Directions" on Google Maps and I don't know how they work either but it is wonderful to live in an era when we have so much available to make our lives easier.

Speaking of easier - Brandon came over and fixed my recliner and the dishwasher.  I was afraid that I was going to have to purchase a new dishwasher but Brandon fixed it.  He is so good.  I really appreciate the fact that Su told me about him and he my go-to guy for everything.  He remodeled my bathroom when we moved in here and built the ramps so Ginny would be able to roll in and out after she got into the wheel chair.  He built the porch on the back where I can spend some time during Spring, Summer and Autumn.  and if anything goes wrong around the place he will take care of it.  Everybody should have a Brandon in their lives.

The recliner is back and I sat in it this evening and promptly fell asleep.  So I woke up around 10:00 and was thankful that I had DVD'ed them so I could watch them.   Miles has settled back into the routine and I am getting more exercise by getting up and down to let him in and out.  It is nice to have him here.

Have a wonderful Tuesday.  Thanks for stopping by. ARWYA  - Hugs

Animal Rescue

John sent me this,  He did not write it but it expresses his feelings about animals.  He has 9 right now. He has rescued Corgis and Great Pyrenees.  He has driven thousands of miles to help people rescue animals and I will tell you this I do not know of a finer man or Mason in the world.  Bar none.  He is the Creme de la creme. John is the one who told me about Hearts United Animal Rescue Shelter where I hope to visit when I am ready for a new friend.

John does not know I am mentioning him in this blog but I wrote and asked him about his current clan.  He wrote the following and I am sharing it without telling him because he is modest and would not brag on himself.  But when you read it you see his beautiful soul shining through.

Well, I've been down to only nine for a couple of years.  I had 11 for a good while.
The present nine, in approximate age order are:
A Pembroke Corgi with an excellent pedigree whom I purchased from his breeder, a lady who's forgotten more about dogs than I'll ever know.
His half-sister, who was sold to what appeared to be a good home, and turned out to be a disaster.  I don't know what this little girl went through, but I have a suspicion that there was human-on-human abuse going on in that household.  The breeder called me, and I got this precious creature the hell OUT of there!
A wonderful Keeshond whom I helped to rescue from a puppy mill in southwestern Iowa.  This wonderful dog was feral when he came to live with me.  You should see him now!  He'll never be a normal Keesie, because he received absolutely no socialization as a pup, but nonetheless...
Two more Pembroke Corgis I suspect are half-brother and -sister.  They were imprisoned in a puppy mill for all of their lives—6+ years—before HUA got them.
A glorious long-haired miniature Dachshund, a former prisoner of the same mill as the previous two Corgis.
A sainted Great Pyrenees who was acquired as a guardian for a herd of goats in northern Kentucky.  When the farmer switched to cattle, the dog was chained in the barn for three years without, I suspect, ever being unchained.  Sometimes he had food and water, sometimes not.  He is now my shadow.  He's curled up by my chair as I write.
A Great Pyrenees x ?? who was bought as a purebred, but clearly is not.  When the buyers' two-year-child pulled the puppy's tail while the puppy was eating, the dog growled.  I would have growled too.  But that was a clear signal that the dog was vicious, and they called the humane society who, thankfully, called me.  She's the farthest thing from vicious I can imagine—not terribly bright, but wonderfully sweet.
A Cardigan Corgi x ??? x ??? from Texas.  There's some terrier in there, I think.  A VERY sweet, energetic boy who'd do ANYTHING to please me.  He was sprung from a "kill shelter" by a Keeshond friend of mine, and railroaded from southern Texas to Iowa.

Colby and Stacy are also friends who rescue dogs - They talk about it on their blog.

Liza
My sister has a rescue dog also.  Her dog has been with her for a couple of years and is just now beginning to show some signs of becoming a normal dog. She was kept in a kennel and not played with.  Essentially just a place to breed puppies and then when she barked they scraped her vocal cords so that she can not bark normally. There is a special place in Hell for people who do to animals what was done to Ginny's dog.    Anyway I hope you take the time to read this and think about what you can do to help - even just giving a donation to a shelter would be a step in the right direction.

I Am an Animal Rescuer

My job is to assist God's creatures. I was born with the drive to fulfill their needs. I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures without planning or selection.

I have bought dog food with my last dime. I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand. I have hugged someone vicious and afraid. I have fallen in love a thousand times. And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count.

I have animal friends and friends who have animal friends. I don't often use the word "pet". I notice those lost at the roadside and my heart aches. I will hand-raise a field mouse and make friends with a vulture.

I know of no creature unworthy of my time. I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven, but I believe there are. Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind? Some may think I am master of the animals, but the animals have mastered themselves... something people still haven't learned. War and abuse make me hurt for the world, but a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind.

I am a member of a quiet but determined army, and we are making a difference every day. There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan, nothing more rewarding than saving a life, no higher recognition than watching them thrive. There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play who, only days ago, was too weak to eat. By the love of those who we've been privileged to rescue, we have been rescued. We know what true unconditional love really is, for we've seen it shining in the eyes of so many, grateful for so little.

A Rescuer's Creed
by Susan M. Pearson

·
·  I shall plead for their lives, campaign for their safety, and uphold their right to a natural death.
·  I shall seek out the injured and the maimed, the unloved, and the abandoned, and tend to them in their last days.
·  I shall not forget their place in the hierarchy of life, nor that we walk in each other's paths.
·  I shall bear witness to the wonder they bring into our lives, and to the beauty they bestow upon our souls.
·  I shall renew their spirits when they are waning, bind their wounds when they bleed, cradle them when they whimper, and comfort them when they mourn.
·  I shall be near them in their hour of greatest need— a companion and friend when the time has come.
·  I shall watch over them and console them and ask that the angels gather them in their arms.
·  From the creatures of the earth I shall learn the fruits of compassion and undying love, and I shall be called the beloved of God.
·  In their company I shall indeed be blessed.

Prayer of a Stray
Author Unknown

Great Master, please send me somebody who'll care,
I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair.
My body is aching, it's so racked with pain,
And Great Master I pray as I run in the rain,
That someone will love me and give me a home,
A warm cozy bed and a big juicy bone.

My last owner tied me all day in the yard,
Sometimes with no water and that was so hard!
So I chewed through my leash and I ran away,
To rummage in garbage; and live as a stray.
But now Great Master I'm tired, hungry and cold,
And I'm so afraid I'll never grow old.
They've chased me with sticks, hit me with stones,
While I run in the streets just looking for bones.

I'm not really bad; please help if you can
For I have become just another "victim of man"!
I'm wormy, Great master , and ridden with fleas,
All I ever wanted was a owner to please.
If you find one for me, I'll try to be good
I won't chew their shoes, and I'll do as I should.
I'll love them, protect them, and try to obey
When they tell me sit, to lie down or to stay!

I don't think I'll make it too long on my own,
’Cause I'm getting so weak; and I'm, oh so alone.
Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry,
’Cause I'm so afraid that I'm gonna die.
I've got so much love and devotion to give,
That I should be given a new chance to live.
So Great Master please, answer my prayer
And send me to somebody who will really care...

Raptors have fledged

When I checked the site link this morning there was just an empty branch.  I found this on Facebook

Report from Facebook

~ ~ALL 3 HAVE FLEDGED ~ ~
When Jim from RRP arrived on site this morning, here is what he said: "When I got to the location, one was on the house, one was on the power pole and the third was on the concrete by the tout raceways at the hatchery." Jim also said, "The one on the ground took flight and landed on the house".

Rescue Dogs

Theresa sent me this.
I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.
I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage.
I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today.
Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past.  I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.  I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.
Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe.  I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor.
So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors.
So many more to be saved.  At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

My friend John sent me this so that credit can be given where credit is due.

Homeless Man reunited with his dog.

Click here to read and view this heartwarming story of a dying man reunited with his dog.

Several years ago I took my sister's dog to visit her in the hospital and before that a friend brought Bailey up to to see me when I was in the hospital,  You have no idea how wonderful it is to be able to do that or to have someone do it for you.  The folks who got this dog and her human together again are saints on earth.  I hope you watch the story.

Dog Sees Mom, Just Home From Afghanistan

I have been staying home because of the red splotches on my face. (caused by the ointment I am putting on it to treat the condition.) I don't know if you can see them or not but they are there and they look awful.  Click to embiggen the pictures if you are interested. I don't really want to be around people with this because it looks like something we used to call the Creeping Crud.
So with all the car problems and everything else I am scarce.  I am fasting tonight because i have to go in for Labs tomorrow.  Such fun - NOT!   I will be glad when it is healed and I feel like being around people again.  I have to go to a couple of meetings this next week but perhaps people will be kind and not look at me like I was contagious.
