One thing I think it's important to remember is that Brutus is NOT a "pet" in the ordinary sense of the word. His rescuer Casey has the knowledge of bears and the physical space to deal with Brutus (and the other bears) as bears. That Casey and Brutus have bonded so closely is wonderful almost beyond words, but that has occurred because Casey has cared for Brutus as a surrogate parent, rather than as a "tamer." It's that, in fact, that makes this story so appealing to me.
