More Winter Beauty / Man Made Sun Dogs

The sculptured snow drifts near Story City and Jewell continue to mesmerize me! Little Wall Lake at Jewell was transformed into a frozen wonderland, and the bright morning sun sparkled like a jewel through the trees. Meanwhile back out in the the country the road crews called in their BIG equipment to plow through drifts over six feet high in some areas. This is what you are missing, by not being in Iowa! You may be jealous....and then again most likely not!

There were real sun dogs out on Friday morning, but I was not able to photograph them, so I went out on Saturday morning hoping they might return. They did not....not exactly! The Ames Power Plant, in releasing excess steam created a large steam cloud that flowed to the south east, and as it ascended the moisture in it, froze into ice crystals, and when one saw the sun through the cloud...walla!!...man made sun dogs. These dogs were visible within a small 1/2 square mile area down near I-35 and highway 30, and were a total delight!
I drove under the interstate to the east and once out of the steam cloud the sun dogs were not visible. Incredible!
