Big, tall thistles are on the hate list of many people, including farmers, gardeners, and highway maintenance workers. Their leaves and stems have sharp barbs that hurt when one brushes into them unexpectedly, but despite those disadvantages they create, they burst forth in brilliant magenta beauty, attracting insects, and posing nicely for photographers. The bud of the thistle is a work of art in itself even before it opens, with the sepals being places symmetrically in layers for visual beauty before the bloom bursts forth. This photo study starts with wide views, and keeps going closer and closer until we have a pleasant encounter with a bumble
bee!
