Friends of mine told me how this owl had adopted their back yard, and invited me over to photograph it, and I did! It posed for me and never flinched one bit, beautiful, stoic, and elegant. It is about 20 inches tall and has a wing span of about three feet. You can read more about it here: Listen to it here.

I think I know that guy from Grand Lodge. Same eyes and yellow nose, anyway...
oooh I love owls!
Lucky sods to have one near by!
You're in Iowa?
Barred Owls have become a subject of great controversy where I am in northern California.
It seems the protections put in place to save the Northern Spotted Owl from extinction, have proved of enormous benefit to Barred Owls, who have moved in (from the East) and are out-competing their smaller owl-kin.
So now, to save the Northern Spotted Owl, environmentalists have gone from the NON-controversial call to *stop clear-cutting old-growth forests*, to considering something far more upsetting. :-(
Only problem with an owl in your yard is the deposits they can make there after a big meal. And I suppose that they could be hard on kittens too.
