Sunday Salute XXIX

Sean Penn is a person who uses his celebrity for causes he believes in.  I am not sure I always agree with his politics but I admire him for the courage of his convictions and his willingness to put his beliefs into action with humanitarian work.

From Wikipedia

Sean Justin Penn (born August 17, 1960) is an American actor, screenwriter and film director, also known for his left-wing political and social activism (including humanitarian work). He is a two-time Academy Award winner for his roles in Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2008), as well as the recipient of a Golden Globe Award for the former and a Screen Actors Guild Award for the latter.
...
In September 2005, Penn traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, to aid Hurricane Katrina victims. He was physically involved in rescuing people,  although there was criticism that his involvement was a PR stunt as he hired a photographer to come along with his entourage. Penn denied such accusation in an article he wrote for The Huffington Post.

...

After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Sean Penn co-founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization and has been running a 55,000 person tent camp.
Due to his visibility as an on-the-ground advocate for rescue and aid efforts in the aftermath, Penn was designated by president Michel Martellyas Ambassador-at-Large for Haiti, the first time that a non-Haitian citizen has been designated as such in the country's history. Penn received the designation on January 31, 2012.

Quotes:
There is no re-inventing the wheel.

What happens is things come to you - director, script - and if you respond to it, it's because it's tapping into some part of what's inside you, and different roles tap into different parts.

There are a few directors around who I have some excitement about spending my $7 at the theatre watching their movies.

I think that I've still not been successful at playing the role of the retired actor, and I'd like to work on that.

I think life's an irrational obsession.

There's a lot of mediocrity being celebrated, and a lot of wonderful stuff being ignored or discouraged.

So if we have anything original to offer, it's to speak from our own life about the society we're in.

I think we all have light and dark inside us.

I like to believe that love is a reciprocal thing, that it can't really be felt, truly, by one.

That on a romantic level, if you feel it about somebody and it's pure, it means that they do too.

If you're willing to put two thoughts into a picture then you're already ahead of the game.

Somewhere along the line, the actions of this government are the actions of me.

Sacrificing American soldiers or innocent civilians in an unprecedented preemptive attack on a separate sovereign nation may well prove itself a most temporary medicine.

Love is a mess, at best, and I figure it can be very real in spite of all the things people try to attach to it.

It has nothing to do with the emotional demands of a role; I've done comedies that are as draining to me as any drama.

You try to do your best at what you're getting paid for.

Well, look at all of these summer blockbusters. You can't help but laugh a little, because you've already seen a lot of these movies 482 times.
