Indianola Balloon Classic Mass Ascension - Photos by Bob Kelly

On Saturday, July 30, the National Balloon Classic in Indianola, Iowa, hosted a colorful spectacle, as over one hundred balloons inflated and launched for their mass ascension.  Large crowds of people gathered on blankets, lawn chairs, under umbrellas in tail gating style to wait, watch, and be enthralled.

There were food vendors, train rides, inflatable play equipment, and a rock climbing wall, for people to enjoy.
As the National Anthem was sung, people assumed various poses.
Soon balloon equipment was unloaded, and the balloons were inflated first by large fans blowing air.

These balloons were laid out and soon would be inflated
There is much work to do by many people to properly unpack, spread out, inflate, and launch a balloon.

This balloon trio was ready to launch.
This balloon is about ready for the hot air burners to finish the inflation.
 Soon the mass ascension began.
The sky began to fill with colorful balloons. There are thirty-seven balloons in this photo, I think!
This large Beaver was one of the speciality balloons.
The Giant Panda was a crowd favorite.
This giant Bald Eagle took a long time to inflate, and remained tethered, but was very impressive!
