Crop rows defining the rural landscape Photos by Bob Kelly

With ample moisture in June and lots of sunshine lately most of the crops are looking quite good. Being a farm boy, I can appreciate a field of beans with well defined rows, and no weeds showing above the beans! We used to "walk the beans" when they were nearly knee high to pull or chop out big weeds or volunteer corn from the previous year. Now herbicides make that unnecessary, but I continue to be concerned if they are the best cumulative solution for the environment.

The first three images show three different fields of soybeans, all looking quite good. The last three images show corn fields…one rolling up and down gentle hills, another one showing the corn tassels starting to emerge in that particular field, and the last image showing a closeup of the tassels themselves.
