Iowa Skies - Photos by Bob Kelly

Photographed last week is this lovely windmill, nearly overtaken by a golf course and a housing development south of Boone. Fortunately I was able to carefully crop out what I did not want, and Mother Nature knocked herself out with the afterglow of colors that appeared after the ball of the sun had dropped below the horizon.
A God's Eye appeared as I was leaving, created by the penetrating sun forcing light through holes in the clouds creating rays of light that in this case highlight an Iowa farm with two silos
The rain shafts descended for several minutes giving the corn and soybeans a welcome shower as they continue to grow.
The neat rows of soy beans show up brightly against the dark skies and white Ames water tower. The western sky was clear and bright and the sun shining on the rain clouds that had passed over made them very impressive, but not dangerous.
The skies of Iowa are ever changing, particularly in the summer with moist humid air creating thunderstorms and foreboding clouds. This panoramic shot of a fierce and rapidly moving squall line caught lots of people by surprise, but in about ten minutes it was all over!
