Sunday Salute LIV

I am taking a short break from my usual Sunday Salutes.  My sister ran across this article in the Ames Tribune about my friend and Eastern Star Sister Dorothy Hinders.  She is very worthy of a Sunday Salute.  The entire article from the Tribune may be found here. They did not want me to copy the whole thing but rather just an excerpt or two.  I do hope you will click over to read the whole story.

‘Daffodil lady’ brightens up city
Dorothy Hinders, of Ames, sells  daffodils each year to raise money for the American

Dorothy Hinders is known simply as the “daffodil lady” for many residents of Ames.
But for all her years selling flowers to raise money for the American Cancer Society, Hinders, 89, still likes to keep a low profile.
“It’s fun, it’s something to keep me out of trouble,” she said.
For hours each week during February and March, Hinders works as the local volunteer coordinator for the society’s annual Daffodil Days fundraiser, which raises money for cancer research and patient care
....
Hinders organizes the sale from top to bottom. She makes phone calls to friends and neighbors, collects cash and checks and delivers bouquets to people all around town.
...
Last year, she said, she drove more than 500 miles between February and March to help promote the sale.
...
“She is such a wonderful person,” Francis said. “Anyone who knows her would do anything that she wants.”
...
Hinders “doesn’t try to draw attention,” but the work she does makes a difference in the lives of many families and individuals dealing with cancer, Cornwell said. In March each year, Hinders brings stuffed teddy bears and flowers to cancer patients at Mary Greeley Medical Center.
“Ames is a wonderful community because we have a lot of people like Dorothy,” Cornwell said. “They are ‘doers’ but they don’t talk about it.”

Dorothy did this again this year (2013) even though she was fighting off illness that actually landed her in the hospital for awhile.  You may remember the pictures of the flowers she send me from this post...

Dorothy has always been a very special lady to me and my family. I don't believe that she missed many days stopping by to see my mother for "coffee" particularly after Mom developed her illness and couldn't get out much.  She was a bright spot in her day.  She also used to stop and see  Nell Staff who was a great lady who loved company.

Dorothy has been the Treasurer for my Eastern Star Chapter until it closed and has travelled many miles as a Grand Companion to a Grand Officer thus spreading her light all over our state.  So for your works for charity, you caring and mostly for the inner light that shines from your beautiful soul Dorothy I salute you on Sunday.
