The Amana Colonies located in central eastern Iowa are one of Iowa's historical and cultural treasures as well as being on the list of National Historic Places. They have a long history of hard work, craftmanship, and community building. You can read about them here , but better yet go visit for a few hours or more, and by all means be there at meal time, for the food is incredibly wonderful and there is lots of it! Most of the homes there have grape arbors around the house that produce grapes for wine making. The buildings are old and have character, and are accented with lovely flowers and a sense of peace and calm that is a far cry from the race track of Interstate 80 just a few miles to the south. Enjoy the pics, and enjoy your own visit to Amana!
