A very special wedding

My friends, Mark and Terry were married today at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship here in Ames. (You can read the ministers remarks on the web site) It was a "standing room" only event. They have been together for thirty years and were able to be married because of the courage of a judge here in Iowa who set aside the unnecessary and unworthy law that said that "marriage was only between a man and a woman."

The minister did a marvelous job with the service (but he did choke up with emotion a couple of times.) Their family stood behind them on the stage while they took their vows and the audience gave them about a five minute ovation (part of it standing) as they signed the legal documents and were pronounced married.

I heard someone say it was an historic occasion and yes, it was, but more than that it was a momentous occasion of their love for one another. I congratulate them on their wedding and wish them another 30 years together.

This is part of what their son read at the service.

On Love
When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep,
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
...

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say,
'God is in my heart,' but rather,
'I am in the heart of God.'
And think not you can direct the course of love,
for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:...
And to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
Kahlil Gibran

Be loved. Hugs, j
