Nim's Island - Spoiler Alert
You have to suspend belief a little (well OK, a lot) watching this movie but it is easy to do. Jodie Foster would make me suspend any belief I had.
In this movie (out this week-end) she plays Alex Rover, an agoraphobic writer living in San Francisco. Her name is Alexandra but her fans think she is Alex and she is a man who has all of these adventures. Her hero is known for his daring escapes from life threatening situations.
Nim is a 12 year old girl living on an island in the South Sea with her father who is a research scientist (published in National Geographic no less). She is connected to the world through books and the computer and satellite phones. She is played by Academy Award nominated Abigail Breslin and she is delightful.
Her father, played by Scottish actor Gerard Butler ( who also played the imaginary Alex Rover) takes off on his boat to go do some research. As luck (?) would have it while he gone Alex sends an e-mail looking for information about volcanoes (did I mention they live on a volcanic island? I didn't think so. See what I mean about suspending belief?) And a storm comes up and the mast blows off his ship and the satellite antenna is blown away and there are huge sharks circling his boat which also has holes in it. I mean this guy is gonna die. Right? Wrong!
You get the picture Alex and Nim have a conversation by computer and Alex gets enough nerve up to leave her home in San Francisco and go halfway around the world by plane boat helicopter and stolen lifeboat to get to Nim's Island. Where she ....Well you get the picture. It is pretty predictable.
In the meantime there is a pelican named Galileo who helps out and a lizard named Fred and a dancing sea lion. Great fun! Yes, the movie was great fun. And Jodie Foster proves that she has great comedic timing and still looks wonderful.
So I am going to give this film a great recommendation. If you don't mind a predictable story line with things happening which just would not happen and you can suspend your belief and just enjoy this film you will have a great time. there were kids there and adults. It appeals to all ages and was a fun compensation for me for my screw-up of last evening (see previous post)
Go see it and enjoy yourself. You will be glad you did. ARTYAL, Hugs, j
