A Second Visit to the Iowa State Fair

Bob Kelly went back to the fair today. I can certainly sympathize with his first part of the post as he nails it for many of the teachers who are forced to sit through those meetings when all they want/need to do is get ready for the kids. Enjoy his latest. j

Today's visit to the fair was one which presented many large or big things, aesthetically beautiful things, and the beauty of new born life! Seeing the largest bull and boar was timed perfectly with the start of the school year and at a time when teachers return to meetings with district administrators and consultants. I have endured many of those meetings I have listened to people who were a lotta bull and big boar (bore)!

The Agriculture Building is a very busy place on two levels, and besides being the home of the butter cow and this year a butter Neil Armstrong, it is also an major exhibit area for fruits, vegetables, farm crops, as well as displays areas for farm organizations and vendors. The view from the second floor shows a bee hive of activity. Directly below the Iowa Egg Council was serving "egg on a stick!" and people lined up by the dozens to have one. The aerial display of various kind of vegetables was really like a beautiful painting. Outside the Agriculture Building was an impressive display of the largest and heaviest pumpkins for this year. The winner tipped the scale at 1100 pounds, while the four runners up were impressive as well!

Next to the Agricultural Building in the Animal Pavilion, this 4-H gal was proudly showing off her prize steer and hoping the judge would like him as much as she did! In another nearby building an artist was painting a giant boulder with an Iowa theme, and was about to start painting in John Wayne! A highlight for many fair goers is the baby animals, and I met a newly hatched chick that was looking out at his new world of faces and was a bit confused. Some very young baby ducks were enjoying the security of togetherness as they slept away the afternoon. A newly born lamb was having a lunch treat as mother proudly looked on.

It was a great day at the fair today, with wonderful weather, small breezes, lovely sights to see and food to eat. It IS a great place to spend a fall day!

We went to the fair on saturday, because it was supposed to rain on Sunday. Guess what, it rained on Saturday, too. Still had a lot of fun. Saw the butter sculpture and a few of the baby animals. The best part, the wonderful gyros, loaded up with hot onions. I saw the Shrimp on a Stick, which looked wonderful, but i was too full by then. A friend of mine who was also there said they were fantastic. So I avoided fried anything. And the only thing on a stick was the WonderBar. So I guess that was milk and chocolate on a stick. I would have had the chocolate coated bacon but I didn't see it.
